Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius

Jørgen Kastholm & Preben Fabricius
Jørgen Kastholm (1931–2007) and Preben Fabricius (1931–1984) were a Danish design duo whose furniture is still regarded as enduring bestsellers today. Both also enjoyed long and fruitful individual careers, but they reached their peak during the years of their collaboration (1961–1968), when they established themselves as one of the most important studios within Danish modernism. The two came from very different backgrounds—Kastholm trained as a blacksmith in his father’s company and later specialized in interior design, also working for the renowned Arne Jacobsen, while Fabricius began as a cabinetmaker and worked for several years with Niels Vodder—but they shared a minimalist, functional approach that placed usability at the forefront. Their common sources of inspiration included the work of American masters such as Charles and Ray Eames and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which Kastholm had the opportunity to see firsthand in his youth while traveling in the United States. They first met while studying at the Skolen for Boligindretning (“School of Interior Design”), during Finn Juhl’s classes. Their best-known product is the FK lounge chair, produced from 1965 by the German company Alfred Kill and now reissued by Walter Knoll—an essentialist masterpiece that became widely popular again in the 2000s thanks to its appearance in the film The Devil Wears Prada. Also for Kill they designed the FK87 “Grasshopper” lounge chair, another of their masterpieces, later reissued by the brand Lange. Other designs by the duo are now reissued by Danish brands such as Carl Hansen & Søn and &Tradition, but their careers remained closely linked to Germany. After their partnership ended, Kastholm moved to Düsseldorf, where he devoted himself primarily to university teaching, while Fabricius went on to create, among other projects, a successful series of Bauhaus-inspired seating—also now marketed by Walter Knoll.
