Ubald Klug
Ubald Klug (1932–2018) was a Swiss designer, today best remembered for having designed the Terrazza sofa (1973) for the brand De Sede, an unmistakable style icon of the 1970s. Born in St. Gallen, he studied interior design in the 1950s at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich under the guidance of Willy Guhl, before completing his education first in Helsinki and later in Paris, where he attended the courses of Jean Prouvé and collaborated with the sculptor François Stahly. His early professional experiences took place in Bern, where he served as technical director at a company specializing in kitchens and sanitary fittings, before returning to settle permanently in Paris in 1966. From 1972 onward, Klug pursued an independent career as an architect and designer, working on a wide range of projects including exhibitions, restaurants, and retail spaces. Among the most significant awards he received during his career are the Swiss Design Prize and the International Design Award conferred by the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
