Carl Hansen & Søn was founded in 1908 on the Danish island of Funen, under the aegis of the eponymous cabinetmaker Carl Hansen. Since its foundation, the small cabinetmaking workshop has experienced rapid success due to the high quality craftsmanship of its furniture as well as the foresight of its founder, responsible for the establishment of many fruitful collaborations with world-renowned designers. The growth of Carl Hansen & Son was deeply influenced by the long-term collaboration with one of the greatest designers of all time: Hans J. Wegner. This creative synergy began in 1949, when Holger Hansen, son of Carl Hansen, attempted the fate with the unknown designer. From that moment,Wegner designed a series of successful furniture, including the now iconic Wishbone Chair.Read more
Designed by
Alfred Homann
Alfred Homann (1948-2022) was a well-known Danish designer and architect. A graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he worked for most of the 1970s in the studio of his professor Vilhelm Wohlert and from him he drew a holistic approach to architecture and interior design: Wohlert in fact believed it was very important for the architect to follow every detail of the project in its entirety, including furnishings and lighting, according to a principle that Homann would make his own throughout his career. In fact, many of his most famous lamps were created for specific projects before reaching series production with the Louis Poulsen brand, a category of products to which he was particularly attached throughout his career. However, one of his best-known and most awarded creations is a chair, the Ensemble model produced by Fritz Hansen in 1992, highly appreciated for its innovative construction technique which involved the integration of small air pockets in the body in order to allow for material savings and greater ergonomics. He also created outdoor furniture that is now part of the Carl Hansen & Søn brand catalogue. In his work as an architect he has dealt with both private residences and public spaces, also designing several railway stations for the Danish state railway company DSB.Read more
