With its high and slender backrest, the FH429 Signature Chair by Carl Hansen & Søn is a graceful oasis of comfort. Like many of the best creations of the Carl Hansen brand, it is a reproduction of a historic model, designed and produced in only 20 pieces in 1954 by the esteemed cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen. Sinuous and harmonious curves outline its shape, as in the delicate hollow on the top of the leather-covered backrest that comfortably accommodates the head. Wooden legs and armrests also have a particularly supple and dynamic silhouette. The FH430 pouf can be associated with the FH429 armchair for a relaxing seat.

Carl Hansen & Søn was founded in 1908 on the Danish island of Funen, under the aegis of the eponymous cabinetmaker Carl Hansen. Since its foundation, the small cabinetmaking workshop has experienced rapid success due to the high quality craftsmanship of its furniture as well as the foresight of its founder, responsible for the establishment of many fruitful collaborations with world-renowned designers. The growth of Carl Hansen & Son was deeply influenced by the long-term collaboration with one of the greatest designers of all time: Hans J. Wegner. This creative synergy began in 1949, when Holger Hansen, son of Carl Hansen, attempted the fate with the unknown designer. From that moment,Wegner designed a series of successful furniture, including the now iconic Wishbone Chair.Read more
Designed by
Frits Henningsen
Frits Henningsen (1889–1965) was an important Danish cabinetmaker and designer of the early twentieth century. He belonged to the generation of cabinetmakers that preceded the boom of Scandinavian Modernism and embodied values that were, in some respects, antithetical to it: his creations still looked to historical styles and were aimed not at the masses but at an elite clientele, often made in rare and precious woods such as rosewood or mahogany. He also favored curved, sinuous forms, in contrast to the younger designers who embraced a more linear style better suited to mass production. Unlike many fellow cabinetmakers, he personally designed his pieces, even though he cannot be considered a designer in the modern sense of the term. The owner of a workshop and shop in central Copenhagen, he was one of the driving forces behind the Danish Cabinetmakers’ Guild and made an important contribution to organizing the first Københavns Snedkerlaugs Møbeludstilling (the major cabinetmakers’ exhibitions that played a key role in the growth and renown of the field). Exemplary instances of fine craftsmanship that remain relevant today, Frits Henningsen’s designs are now reissued by the brand Carl Hansen & Søn.Read more
