Shanghai is a vase produced by Kartell and designed by Mario Bellini who conceived the cone-shaped structure, broken and folded several times like a sheet of paper. The aesthetic choice seems to want to recall the name of this vase, creating an ideal twist of lines that seem ready to divide and spread on the ground. The plastic material of Shanghai allows glimpses through its transparencies, giving the entire object an extremely suggestive three-dimensionality. The Kartell vase is available in different colors including blue, amber and transparent, to meet the most diverse tastes.

Color and imagination, but also an excellent technical mastery of the materials: with these weapons, Kartell has managed to make the most of a traditionally economical material such as plastic, creating products with a high design content perfect even for the most luxurious homes. Founded in 1949 by the chemical engineer Giulio Castelli, Kartell started its production with small high-level design objects, developing over time on increasingly consistent sizes and shapes, thus arriving to offer colorful and functional furnishing accessories with affordable prices to everyone.
Recognized the high potential of plastic materials and thanks to the fruitful collaboration with the architect Gino Colombini, in the following years Castelli was able to undertake a long series of experiments that led to the conquest of the first Compasso d'Oro in 1955. In those same years the lighting division was inaugurated with the first collection signed by the Castiglioni brothers.Read more

Mario Bellini (1935-) has always remained strongly linked to his training as an architect, managing to bring his characteristic principles into all the very different areas in which he had the opportunity to design. After starting his career as design director at the Rinascente, in 1963 he was called to Olivetti where he became the protagonist of an extraordinary season of technological innovations. In addition to numerous computers and electronic equipment, he also has the opportunity to design the first personal computer in history, the Olivetti P101. Since 1978 he has also had the opportunity to work in the automotive sector, becoming a consultant for Renault. In the field of furniture, too, he holds leading roles, signing some of the most relevant products of the 1970s and subsequent decades for Cassina and B&B Italia. He was director of Domus magazine, president of ADI and eight times winner of the Compasso d'Oro. He has also worked with companies such as Yamaha, Heller, Nemo and Rosenthal. Since the 1980s he has mainly devoted himself to architecture, with projects such as the Natuzzi headquarters in North Carolina, the interiors of the Deutsche Bank headquarters in Frankfurt, the Tokyo Design Center and the Milan Congress Center in the Portello district.Read more
