Mayor is a sofa designed by Arne Jacobsen and Flemming Lassen in 1939 for a design competition that aimed to design a town hall, a library and a theatre. They managed to win first prize by designing a wedding hall for the town hall complete with furnishings and, above all, a sofa on which the couples would sit before the ceremony. The sober taste and style used by the designers were so popular that this model became a catalogue item, still produced today for living rooms and reception rooms all over the world. A fundamental feature is the wide backrest, capable of accommodating the body and supporting it even in a sitting position.

Arne Jacobsen
Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) is one of the immortal founding fathers of great post-war Danish design. His sober approach to modernism, typically Scandinavian, conditioned all the generations of designers that follow and laid the foundations for a style appreciated all over the world. First of all, he always considers himself as an architect: his products are, in fact, created for a specific project, and only later destined for mass production. His most famous project is the creation of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, of which he takes care not only of the architecture, but also of every detail of the interior design, personally designing the furnishings, lamps and even cutlery. It is on this occasion that products such as the Egg armchair are created, perhaps the most famous and iconic seat of all time, still made today by Fritz Hansen, or the AJ lamp, later a great bestseller for the Louis Poulsen company. He also experiments with the design of everyday objects, for brands such as Georg Jensen and Stelton, but also and above all of chairs. The models made with Fritz Hansen revolutionize the design of the modern chair; according to his former collaborator Knud Holscher Jacobsen "he designed the chairs as Matisse painted the pictures - freely and with pleasure".Read more
