Pastoe

Salvioni is Pastoe official dealer

Pastoe is a Dutch brand founded in 1913, internationally renowned for producing minimalist furniture and furnishings designed to adapt to a wide range of contemporary needs. A key figure in Pastoe’s history was designer Cees Braakman, who shaped the brand’s aesthetic while introducing innovative industrial processes, such as bent plywood, as well as modular and flexible systems of cabinets and storage units.

Pastoe history

Pastoe was founded in Utrecht in 1913 under the name UMS (Utrechtsche Machinale Stoel- en Meubelfabriek) by entrepreneur Frits Loeb. Initially, production focused on the manufacture of chairs. The catalogue subsequently expanded to include a wide range of traditional furnishings and knock-down steel furniture designed to enhance practicality and functionality.

In the post-war period, Cees Braakman visited the Herman Miller factories, where he was so strongly influenced by their approach that he went on to revolutionize the company’s production. The first bedroom collection, called “Pas-Toe,” was launched, followed by the new “Pastoe naar Maat” collection, comprising modular and configurable storage systems for the Dutch market.

More recently, Pastoe has undergone a long period of consolidation and redefinition. It has brought numerous Dutch brands under its umbrella, including Spectrum, Rietveld Originals and Atelier Artiforte, transforming its catalogue into a true “living museum” of design. Archival pieces by masters such as Gerrit Rietveld and Martin Visser are presented alongside geometric, contemporary furniture systems with a more modern aesthetic. The brand’s offering is divided into three main categories: Storage Furniture and Systems / Chairs and Armchairs / Lighting and Accessories.

Pastoe design

Among Pastoe’s best-known designs is the iconic A’dammer cabinet, characterized by a vertical tambour door that rolls up and disappears into the side of the unit; the Landscape Cabinet and Tangle Cabinet, respectively a sideboard and a cabinet with a distinctly geometric and minimalist aesthetic; the Wire Series, a collection of chairs and armchairs made from interwoven steel wire; the SE07 and SE69 chairs, two designs by Martin Visser; the Zwaan Armchair by Gerrit Rietveld; the TC6 Circlelamp by Aldo van den Nieuwelaar; and the K46 by Kho Liang Ie.

Since 2024, Pastoe has experienced a major revival following a successful joint venture with the design company Moooi. Under the strong artistic direction of Marcel Wanders, the group has found fertile ground for growth, reinventing its style and re-establishing itself as a brand with a distinctly contemporary appeal.

Salvioni Design Solutions has chosen to collaborate with Pastoe to introduce a strong and distinctive selection of minimalist furniture into its catalogue, making full use of modularity and the extensive customization options offered by its designs. The “Pastoe naar Maat” concept (“Made-to-Measure Furniture”) remains highly relevant today, particularly in pieces such as the Landscape Cabinet and various storage units. The brand’s minimalist, geometric aesthetic also resonates strongly with contemporary tastes, creating versatile compositions with a distinctly Nordic appeal.
