One of many iconic pieces by Cassina,usually known for the simplicity of its shapes and its recognizability. The Zig Zag Chair by Rietveld represents one of the first examples of cantilevered seat, created by connecting four tops in rhythmic sequence in order to develop an illusory instability. The project replaces the common elements composing a chair – legs, seat and backrest – with a unique continuous overturned Z-shape paper in wood. The dove-tail joints made by Cassina add value to this design choice, giving to the Zig Zag Chair an aesthetic distinctiveness which is visible in the natural wood version and even more remarkable in the several coloured variants.

Founded in 1927 by the brothers Cesare and Umberto in the heart of Brianza furniture, Cassina is one of the long-lived Made in Italy industrial design companies. From the early ‘30s, Cassina brothers identified the strong demand for home furnishings and interpreted in a far-sighted way the renewed taste of the new emerging classes. From this intuition, Cassina started a real revolution in the indoor furnishings design. Since then, the company has been pursuing a path of research and innovation, involving prestigious designers and architects in the study of new furnishings models. In the last few years the collaboration with Gio Ponti has begun. Thanks to this partnership were born the 646 chair, known as Leggera, and the subsequent model 699 or Superleggera.Read more

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was a historic Dutch designer, protagonist of the avant-garde movement of De Stijl. Son of a carpenter and appreciated cabinetmaker himself, he got involved in the artistic ferments of the first post-war period, adhering to the stylistic features of Neoplasticism and being the first to adapt the principles of that movement to the production of furniture. His creations bear the strong aesthetic and theoretical influence of painters such as Piet Mondrian and Theo Van Doesburg, as it is evident in what is perhaps his most famous creation: the Red and Blue Chair, dominated by straight lines and by the use of primary colors. He also applied the same principles to architecture, in projects determined by a rigid geometry, such as the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht. Starting in the 1960s, his furnishings have been reissued by Cassina, in the famous "I Maestri" collection, while other less famous creations have been more recently re-proposed in the catalogs of Dutch brands such as Lensvelt and Spectrum.Read more
