The Clam Chair is a true icon of Danish Mid-Century design. Although it was not particularly successful at the time of its release, in recent years it has become a cult piece on the Scandinavian vintage market, achieving remarkable prices at auction and finding its way into the homes of prominent collectors: in 2013, a pair of Clam Chairs reached the record price of $220,000. This armchair, whose soft and welcoming shapes perfectly embody the Danish concept of hygge, has also been at the center of a small mystery. It was initially attributed to the designer Viggo Boesen (creator of the Little Petra armchair, now reissued by &Tradition, to which it bears a strong resemblance). Later, it was thought to be the work of the Norwegian designer Martin Olsen (who, in fact, never existed). Then, for years, historians credited it to the little-known Philip Arctander, until in 2020 the combined research of historians and enthusiasts finally reconstructed its true story. The Clam Chair was actually designed in 1944 by upholsterer Arnold Madsen, who later sold the rights to a Norwegian company. With every new discovery, interest in the chair continued to grow, surrounding it with an aura of legend and driving up its auction prices. Although it is still relatively little known in Italy, it is now deeply admired by true enthusiasts of Scandinavian design. Today, it is produced exclusively by the London-based brand Dagmar, which began as a restorer of Scandinavian Mid-Century classics before evolving into a publisher of many forgotten gems of Danish design.

Dagmar was founded in 2014 as a company specializing in the production of Scandinavian furniture with a modern and contemporary style. The stylistic approach follows the taste of the twentieth century, while the products it draws inspiration from reproduce creations from the 1930s and 1970s, characterized by typically minimal lines and a refined artisanal balance in which wood becomes the absolute protagonist. Careful design research carried out on more recent creations allows Dagmar’s collection to align perfectly with contemporary tastes, offering elements suited to various home environments where one wishes to create welcoming and sophisticated atmospheres, defined by pure essence.Read more
