Fritz Hansen's Superellipse model is one of the best known historical tables of Scandinavian design, usually best known for its chairs and armchairs. Apparently rather ordinary, it owes much of its charm to the shape of the top, neither fully oval nor rectangular: this shape, called the super-ellipse, owes its fame to an eclectic figure, the Danish poet and mathematician Piet Hein, who in the 1959 he was commissioned to redesign a square in Stockholm to optimize the flow of cars. After extensive research Hein came to this form, based on rigid mathematical proportions, in which he immediately grasped a strong potential for use in other areas. He then teamed up with the craftsman and designer Bruno Mathsson, one of the leading names in Swedish design, to begin producing tables whose top took this practical shape. The tables of the Superellipse line are produced by Fritz Hansen starting from 1968; in addition, they decided to expand the range by introducing a more compact version, the Super-Circular, whose design was also supervised by Arne Jacobsen.
