The Freischwinger No. 2 armchair was conceived as an avant-garde furnishing element designed by the architect and artist Friedrich Kiesler in 1933 for the apartment of Marguerita Mergentime and her husband Charles in the The Beresford. The commission encompassed not only the armchair itself but the entire interior design scheme, within which the Freischwinger No. 2 quickly emerged as a visually striking centerpiece. Later, Wittmann revived the original design for serial production. The chair’s most distinctive feature is its tubular steel structure, which allows the seat to remain cantilevered without the need for rear legs. A single continuous line of polished chrome-plated steel seamlessly connects the seat, backrest, and floor support, creating a graphic form of remarkable visual impact. In its contemporary version, the chair incorporates an internal suspension system consisting of pocket springs mounted on crossed elastic webbing, enclosed within a multilayer upholstery structure. This construction provides exceptional comfort while preserving the elegance and lightness of Kiesler’s original design.

Wittmann was founded in 1896 as a company specializing in the production of saddles, later transforming into a furniture manufacturer. In 1950, it changed its identity, becoming a full-fledged manufacturer of home goods. Its catalog included handmade chairs, sofas, beds, and mattresses. Over time, Wittmann expanded its business, always keeping management in the hands of the original family but expanding the quality and strength of its brand to become a true international player.Read more
