Carl Hansen & Søn was founded in 1908 on the Danish island of Funen, under the aegis of the eponymous cabinetmaker Carl Hansen. Since its foundation, the small cabinetmaking workshop has experienced rapid success due to the high quality craftsmanship of its furniture as well as the foresight of its founder, responsible for the establishment of many fruitful collaborations with world-renowned designers.The growth of Carl Hansen & Son was deeply influenced by the long-term collaboration with one of the greatest designers of all time: Hans J. Wegner. This creative synergy began in 1949, when Holger Hansen, son of Carl Hansen, attempted the fate with the unknown designer. From that moment,Wegner designed a series of successful furniture, including the now iconic Wishbone Chair.

Carl Hansen & Son produces high-quality furnishings, including dining tables and chairs, wardrobes, footrests, sofas, coffee tables and children’s furniture, pledging to preserve its centuries-old artisan tradition and complement it with modern production technologies. True to its roots and to the design philosophy of Hans J. Wegner, Carl Hansen & Son produces timeless quality and beauty, paying the utmost attention to sustainability in both design and materials. Carl Hansen & Son’s classics also include the first four seat models designed by Wegner in 1950 for the company: the CH22, the CH23, the CH24 (the famous Wishbone Chair) and the CH25.

These chairs have confirmed Wegner as one of the most innovative and talented designers in the Danish furniture and showed some of the distinctive signs of its design (organic shapes, steam-curved backrest, woven paper braided seats). In addition to the wide range of finishes in oak, beech, walnut, ash and cherry, Carl Hansen combines many possibilities of leather and fabrics able to give softness and comfort to the structures of chairs, armchairs and sofas. Examples include the E005 – Embrace Chair, CH07 – Shell Chair and CH445 – Wing Chair.

Over the years, Carl Hansen & Son has maintained a constant focus on preserving the Danish design classics while continuing to expand its collection. Today Carl Hansen & Son produces furniture by renowned Danish design masters from the 1950s such as Hans J. Wegner, Ole Wanscher, Frits Henningsen, Kaare Klint, Mogens Koch and Poul Kjærholm, while working with contemporary designers who share the founding principles of modern Danish style: simplicity, functionality and craftsmanship. Recent collaborations include those with the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the Austrian trio EOOS, the multidisciplinary artist Naja Utzon Popov, the designer couple Strand + Hvass, the designer Thomas Bo Kastholm and Anker Bak.
