Memphis Milano

Salvioni is Memphis Milano official dealer

Memphis was born in 1980 as an expression of radical design embodied in the creative genius of Ettore Sottsass, a pivotal figure around which young designers and architects from all over the world gather. A unique, ingenious and futuristic idea inspires this group of promises of contemporary design who set to work to create a collection of objects capable of embodying not only the highest expression of the radical movement, but its explicit crowning molded by the wise hands of Ettore Sottsass, Aldo Cibic, Matteo Thun, Marco Zanini, Martine Bedin, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie Du Pasquier and George Sowden.

Memphis furniture

The first Memphis collection had 55 products. Under the artistic direction of Barbara Radice, they were presented in Milan in 1981, on September 19, in the Brunella and Mario Godani showroom Arc’74 in Corso Europa 2. The event has changed the history of design due to the revolutionary echo of those works: elegance and kitsch, rational and irrational forms, full of plastic elements and patterns that simulate precious materials, they gave birth to something unique and unexpected, unthinkable for the canons of the time. What is most surprising is the application of the game concert in the rational language of industrial production.

Among the big names who gave birth to Memphis, it is impossible not to mention Andrea Branzi, Alessandro Mendini, Michael Graves, Hans Hollein, Shirō Kuramata, Peter Shire, Masanori Umeda, Arata Isozaki, Terry Jones, Javier Mariscal, Paola Navone , Luigi Serafini, Bruno Gregori of Studio Alchimia. With their contribution, Memphis has continued every year to present revolutionary innovations and ideas at the Salone del Mobile, showing its ability to see the future, the new, the unknown.

Memphis Milano and Post Design

Since its debut in 1981, Memphis has changed its appearance several times, then settled in 1985 with the name of Memphis Milano. In the same year Ettore Sottsass left the group. Under the guidance of Ernesto Gismondi, the company continued to pursue its creative path until 1988, the year in which the group presented its latest exhibition. Today the company is led by Alberto Bianchi Albrici, administrator for ten years and today a cornerstone of the brand identified by the Post Design gallery.

Among the pieces that have marked its history and that still find space in the sector’s inspiration, we mention the Carlton dividing unit and the Casablanca living room furniture by Ettore Sottsass, the First chair by Michele de Lucchi, the Oceanic and Ashoka lamps, Tahiti and Super. The carpets by Sottsass and Nathalie du Pasquier are also very popular.
