La Permanente Mobili di Cantù is a historic consortium of furniture manufacturers and artisans, founded in 1893 with the aim of promoting and showcasing Cantù’s excellence and long-standing furniture-making tradition around the world. Its historic headquarters, Palazzo de La Nuova Permanente Mobili Cantù, located in Piazza Garibaldi, was designed by Renato Radici and represents an important example of 20th-century architecture.

Throughout the 20th century, La Permanente Mobili di Cantù gave a voice to generations of visionary designers, transforming their ideas into timeless icons and presenting them to the public. In doing so, it offered a comprehensive—and as exhaustive as possible—overview of Cantù’s furniture production, helping to promote sales and much more.

The artistic and cultural significance of this exhibition is clear: designers, enthusiasts, furniture makers, and manufacturers of the time had the opportunity to exchange ideas and keep up to date, sharing their expertise and creating a common experience within the industry.

Over the years, numerous prototypes displayed at La Permanente Mobili di Cantù were developed into catalogue products that continue to shape the world of design today, such as the Mole armchair by Linbrasil.

Today, La Permanente Mobili Cantù presents Selettiva for All, a collection where memory and innovation come together—a cultural and commercial project that bridges past and future through reissues of original designs presented in Cantù during the 1950s and 1960s by renowned designers such as Ilmari Tapiovaara, Niko Kralj and Peter Karpf.

These pieces do not simply reproduce the original designs faithfully; instead, they reinterpret their production, adapting them to contemporary tastes and technologies. The result is a collection of unique pieces, iconic in style yet perfectly at home in the present day.

Among the most iconic products reissued by La Permanente Mobili Cantù are Peter Karpf’s PK65 chair, Carlo Hauner’s CH55 armchair, Ilmari Tapiovaara’s IT57 bookcase, and Pieter De Bruyne’s PB61 sideboard. Each piece embodies a dialogue with the past while looking towards the future of furniture design.

The furniture produced is also made up of official, philologically faithful reissues of designs awarded at the historic exhibitions of the 1950s and 1960s, bearing the names of designers who went on to become influential figures in the furniture industry. Finally, each piece is unique, as La Permanente Mobili Cantù does not engage in mass production, but instead creates limited series with a focus on collecting rather than international mass distribution.
